del's scratch pad http://rud.posterous.com dunno why I keep it... posterous.com Sat, 25 Jun 2011 20:44:37 -0700 Posterous and importing http://rud.posterous.com/posterous-and-importing http://rud.posterous.com/posterous-and-importing

I'm not a patient person, so I created a mini dump of my wordpress to try importing here at Posterous. All I'm after is seeing how Posterous handles the existing URLs from my old posts. See, with wordpress it has permalinks like "/year/month/some-cleaned-version-of-the-post-title" and I want to know if Posterous will play along.

After just a few minutes I get the email that the mini-import has succeeded. Bigger than shit, Posterous makes permalinks like "/some-cleaned-and-truncated-version-of-the-title". So importing all my old wordpress dreck and pointing the domain name here instead will break any existing links. There aren't many existing links, but they are out there.

Figures...

Now about the three day wait on the other import. While creating the mini dump I noticed that wordpress added some extra crap to the beginning of the file. Specifically, some plugin isn't working nicely with the exporter, and the first several lines consist of "<b>Warning</b>:  include_once() [function.include]: Failed opening '../../../wp-settings.php' for inclusion blah blah blah wp-codebox.php" blah. I manually removed all that from the mini dump before uploading here. I can't help but wonder if that's what is borking the import of the bigger dump. Big dump isn't really that huge, only 160k, so I can't imagine it's a size issue.

Of course it doesn't much matter since the URLs will be broken if I move the domain here anyway. So I guess I'll cancel the older import and figure out something else. Besides, why in the hell do I need a blog anyway?

Come on Posterous, it's been 72 hours since I asked you to import my wordpress dumpfile.

I once again found myself debating whether I want to switch my (highly underused) blog over to Posterous. So I saved the backup dump from my wordpress install, uploaded it to Posterous, and am currently waiting for it to finish processing. Mostly I want to see just how it handles WP's post slugs, if I point the domain name here instead, will all my old posts' URLs still be useable?

Of course now my host seems to be having a hiccup, none of my stuff there (or their control panel) will load. Timing out. Fun...

Well, I indeed got an iPod touch for xmas. Unfortunately I can't get ubuntu to recognize it. That sucks pretty bad. So far to get anything done I have to reboot to windows. Pretty obnoxious. I'm stoked with the iPod so far. Having a blast playing with apps and stuff. I rather like this thing's spell checker too. For the most part it's correcting everything I give it :) I was a little worried about how well I'd be able to get used to the touch keyboard, but it's not really being a problem at all. If I could just get ubuntu to see the damned thing to load music on it things would be grand.

To make this post more than a general bitch, here's a pic if my mom and niece

Update: Wow! I've been poking at the app again and just found out that this post was saved after all. Seems posterous app may auto save? If so that's pretty cool. The Wordpress app doesn't seem to. Maybe this one is handier. We'll see. Wonder where the pic will appear in this post? Omg the spellcheck thing is friggin slick too! I'm really digging this thing.

That sucked. I had this post all typed out on my new iPod touch that I indeed got for christmas. It was all about how sucky it is that I can't get Ubuntu (10.4) to recognize my shiny new iPod and that rebooting into Windows isn't a nice thing to have to do.

I wrote a bit about how I'm quite enjoying my new iPod, and how the onscreen touch keyboard isn't anywhere near as difficult to use as I'd feared. I mentioned how much retarded fun I was having installing and playing with various apps that I may or may not need.

I wrote all this with the Posterous app on my snazzy toy.

Then I attached a photo of my mother and niece, and the Posterous app suddenly ceased working nicely. The i button screen showed some hex looking string instead of a handy place to add another tag. (I don't recall exactly what it said, and it's gone now. If I ever see it again I'll file a proper bug report.) No biggie, didn't need another tag anyway. Unfortunately when I poked the go button the app disappeared, taking my post along with it...

So here I am, writing this post with the web editor, on Windows, instead of with a groovy app on my toy. Maybe Posterous isn't winning the "which blog should Del use" contest after all.

Well, Posterous seems to be winning the "which blog should Del use" battle here, although none of the three I'm playing with are working 100% as I'd like.

Starting with an existing theme and tweaking I ended up with a better looking one here than I did at tumblr. Wordpress won't let me tweak a them without paying them. That's not a deal breaker because I'm cheap (though I am), it's just that if I'm gonna pay for it then I might as well keep on using the installed WP on my own friggin webserver.

A test email from the ol' telephone showed up just fine here at Posterous. It's been 15 minutes and two test emails and still my test posts haven't showed up on tumblr. Haven't tried email posting on WP yet 'cause I haven't set it up to do that yet. Given that Posterous intends for posts to be emailed by default that makes Posterous the winner here. (update: just checked, now tumblr is showing the 2nd test post from gmail, but still nothing sent from the phone...)

Unfortunately none of them load great in the mini Opera on my phone. The tumblr site is all over the place with overlapping images and crap making it difficult to log in, while my site loads the full-but-zoomed-out full page. Specifying "/mobile" on the end of my URL loads a mobile page that only shows the latest post, with plain black text on a plain white background (ugly). WP loads a mobile ("touch" it says) version of my site quite nicely, but the main site just renders blank white so I can't log in to the dashboard. Loading m.wp works okay, but still tries to load the full dashboard in some cases which taxes the phone pretty bad. Posterous loads a decent mobile version of my site by default, but the main dashboard thing is still full-size and zoomed out. At least the Posterous one loads though. Advantage Posterous I guess.

Of course this will all change if I ever get a new, decent phone. Or maybe christmas will bring that iPod touch I asked for.

Since I needed another blog to not use I now have a posterous one too. Mostly I'm after something that'll work better with my phone and other more mobile than not devices. Dunno if this is it or not, we'll see what happens.

Now to find a theme that doesn't suck...
